Roddensvale School has a hydrotherapy pool on-site. This was completed in 2017 and officially opened by Sharon O’Connor, EA Chairperson in March 2018.
The £1million facility has been a superb addition to the school, and enhances the lives of pupils throughout the school.
The hydrotherapy pool is at a higher temperature than a swimming pool and allows users to experience a range of movements, under the supervision of the physiotherapists. Hydrotherapy for children seeks to achieve similar aims to that of a land-based programme. It will be used in combination with a land-based programme to ensure carry-over of functional skills. Typical aims of a paediatric hydrotherapy programme include:
- Promotion of normal development
- Working towards physical milestones
- Decrease pain
- Normalise tone
- Increase strength
- Increase function
- Provide relaxation if appropriate
- Mobilise stiff joints
- Increase ability to weight-bear
As well as the Physiotherapy-led sessions, classes throughout the school are timetabled for hydrotherapy slots, allowing pupils the chance to enjoy the benefits of the pool, practise life skills such as dressing, enjoy relaxation time, develop water confidence and have fun with their friends.
