In Roddensvale School we are currently using an approach called Attention Autism.
Attention Autism starts at a level where children cannot get it wrong. They are provided with an irresistible invention to learn. The children slowly move through the attention levels and learn as part of a group. It aims to build attention skills gradually over a number of weeks, beginning with a scenario where the child only has to concentrate on one activity – watching the adult show them a fantastic, interesting activity. Activities are structured to first capture attention and then maintain attention, before moving into turn-taking and interactive activities.
This approach is been carried out throughout each week in the junior classes. The children are learning to attend to activities, to develop their concentration levels and to have lots of fun in the process. Shared good times make fantastic memories and this structure can provide a framework where we can nurture social, communication and thinking skills.
